Home Dec Trends for Spring ‘08

    Marcus-AuberginePaisley MarcusMochaLeaf

We’re seeing some great new directions for Spring home decor, including new colors, patterns and fabrications.  Some of the standouts include:

  • PURLE as an accent color -  Take a look at the current home dec magazine covers and you’ll find it in every imaginable shade, from pale lilac to deep aubergine.  Check out flowers & coordinates of AUBERGINE GARDEN by Faye Burgos, pairing shades of purple with blendable tones of sage, coral and tan for season-spanning elegance.
  • NEUTRALS WITH GREY - Neutral doesn’t have to mean boring this season, as seen in the sophisticated MOCHA MERINGUE collection by Michele D’Amore.  Tan, ivory, mocha, brown and grey motifs are skillfully layered for a dimensional effect.  It’s a look you’ll love for quilts, decor and artful clothing pieces.
  • GOING GREEN - Environmentally responsible products continue to grow in popularity at every level of the market, making OASIS CANVAS a “natural” choice for the modern quilting, sewing and craft enthusiast.  Try it for easy-to-sew, eco-savvy totes and much more.
  • BIG BLOOMS - Large-scale flowers lend themselves to lots of creative inspirations including applique, fussy cutting and more.  And you’ll find them in every color palette, from neutral to bright to deep tones.  Sew up fun dresses for girls of all ages, eye-popping pillows for the home, table settings for spring time entertaining and more! And did we mention that they’re great for quilts, too?

The Easiest Tote Bag You’ll Ever Sew

…is available on the Marcus Fabrics website, under the Make It With Marcus free Marcus-Oasis Tote Bagproject section.  I stitched up this sample in environmentally sound OASIS CANVAS (in my favorite deep, spicy red).  This fabric is certified organic 100% cotton.  ”Certified” means that the cotton crop has been grown organically for at least 3 years.  It’s also colored with eco-friendly dyes.

Once you’ve mastered the basic construction steps, it’s easy to change the sizes to suit your needs, from a generous grogery shopping bag, to a slender, medium sized magazine tote, to a cute little lunch bag.  Then change the fabrics for a wardrobe of carryalls – it would be equally great in your choice of SIMPLY CHIC DECOR lightweight canvas prints.  For extra credit, customize your tote with applique, embroidery, patchwork, simple pockets and a hook & loop, button & tab, or zipper closure.   —–   lisa shepard stewart

Marcus Sponsors Road to CA 2008 Prize - See the Winner!

Marcus Road 2 CA WinningQuiltAs we have for many years, Marcus Fabrics again proudly sponsored one of the prizes for the 2008 Road to California quilt show & competition.  Shown here is the winning entry of our $500 cash prize for “Best Large Quilt,” a stunning piece by Gloria McKeehan of Redlands, WA (quilted by Lynette Harlan.)  Gloria based her 80″ x 80″ design on the Oley Valley Tulip, starting it in 2005 and completing it in 2007.

Gloria says, “I challenged myself to make something really different with a lot of color and design. I did needle-turn applique and the quilt has two wool battings to give it the trapunto look.”

To view other winners, and to learn more about the event, visit Road to California.

Have You Seen the Latest Quilting Mags?

Here in the office, we always peruse the quilting magazines as soon as they arrive, not only to see what’s new in the land of fiberarts, but also to check on the latest Marcus Fabrics buzz. Yesterday, we received both Quilt magazine’s April/May 08 issue, AND Quilter’s Newsletter’s April ‘08 issue…

With Earth Day (April 22) quickly approaching, Quilt has a feature on “Earth Awareness”, which inclluded a mention of Marcus’ OASIS CANVAS, but I was equally interested to read about the eco-friendly battings by Fairfield and Mountain Mist.  We look forward to getting a sample of these to try in the office.  If you’ve tried any of these, let us know what you think of them.  And if you’re already a “green quilter”, be sure to send us your tips!

In the same issue you’ll also find the advertisement for the Web Sampler Celebration, sponsored by twelve leading quilt retailers, and featuring Judie Rothermel’s Civil War Classics group…

Meanwhile, Quilter’s Newsletter mentions our affiliation with the New England Quilt Museum, referring to our new Merrimack collection in particular.  Happy reading! -lisa

It IS Easy Being “Green”

Quilters, by nature, are generally among the most resourceful people ever invented, with wise ways that existed long before “reduce, reuse, recycle” became a household mantra.  And at Marcus, we believe that those resourceful, earth-conscious ways should be shared, and applauded.  So from now through March 31, 2008, we’re collecting your best tipsMarcus-Oasis for creating beautiful things while at the same time helping to preserve the environment, in both big and small ways.  By sharing your tips, you’ll be entered in a random drawing for one of three fat quarter bundles of OASIS CANVAS, certified organic canvas-weight cotton made with eco-friendly dyes.

Submit your tip here, and thanks in advance for your contribution!

Time for a Beautiful New Calendar…

..and we have just the one for you!  Edelen Wille designed its 2008 “From the Garden” Edelen Wille Calendar 08calendar to coordinate with its Marcus Fabrics collection by the same name.  The calendar features twelve images of vintage seed catalog illustrations dating from 1901 to 1921.  Ask for the fabric and calendar at your local quilt shop.

If you’re not quite in the mood for a needle & thread project, but still wanna play in your Marcus - Ellen's Floorquilt in repro fabricsstash, why not make a no-sew Floorquilt!??  We loved the concept by Ellen Highsmith Silver, and it’s all detailed in her book, Floorquilts! Fabric Decoupaged Floorcloths - No-Sew Fun

Ellen created this Floorquilt (shown at right and detail below) for our booth at Quilt Market in Houston this fall from a pleasing mix of several of our reproduction fabric collections.  It now graces our lobby wall, but it’s durable and is completely designed for use as a floorcloth!

Seen at Quilt Market…

Marcus - QM Booth - Surf & Sand

Our major trade show, International Quilt Market, took place in Houston from October 27-29, and as always, it turned up a wide variety of trends and creative directions.

One of the most noticeable was a look you might call ”Neutrals and Naturals”.  Earthtones were everywhere, fueled in part by the push for eco-friendly textiles, and in part by color trends that stress a more casual and uncluttered lifestyle.

We also debuted ELEMENTS (shown at right) by Faye Burgos, a Marcus Fabrics - Elementsclean, bold group of contemporary texture prints in tans, beiges and white-on-white.

Cool blues also continue in popularity, especially when paired with the neutrals, as shown in our booth display for SURF & SAND (photo).  Don’t you LOVE the wide quilt border in the large paisley?  The quilt, and the woven pillow at the bottom, are by Prairie Point Junction.

Baby quilts were big news, too, and while they never quite go out of style, this season’s sweet yet sophisticated BELLA BABY by Michelle D’Amore led the pack!

See these and all of the latest Marcus fabrics online now, and in quilt shops and fabric stores worldwide this season!
