Quilt Block Sewing Machine Cover
by Vandarra Robbins
Quilt Block Sewing Machine Cover
This month we're beginning our new Series Project, a wonderful interpretation of the new Pansies & Ivy collection with a home décor twist. Over the next six months, we'll present original sewing room accessory designs by Vandarra Robbins. Our survey results showed that many of you enjoy combining your quilting skills with crafts and home décor; we hope you'll enjoy these easy-to-sew essentials, including this month's sewing machine cover, a wall organizer, scissor holder, window valance, armchair pincushion /caddy, and a chair cushion/pillow.

The featured Floral Block quilt block design will be repeated in several of the pieces - click here to view these instructions - these instructions will be available throughout the series.

Sewing Machine Cover
NOTE: All seam allowances are ½" unless otherwise noted.

Taking Measurements

Measure the sewing machine: Use the larger number of any common areas. For example, if the bottom width measures 11" and the top width measures 10", use 11" for the measurement. Remember to include the hand wheel in your measurements.

A=measure width across the top and bottom.
B=measure height
C=measure from front of the machine to the back of the machine
D=measure from bottom, up the side, over the top and down the side

R13 Pansies & Ivy
  • 1 yard Patt. 1031-177D -- purple spaced pansy
  • ¼ yard T461-177D -- lilac texture (optional piping)
(2 times the measurement of D)
  • 10" square of fabric backing (this design used the same as for the machine cover)
Cutting Edge
Note: Measure your sewing machine as shown. Add the following to your measurements:
  • 1" seam allowances ( ½" per side), ¾" ease, and 1" hems
  • 1 front, 1 back as per measurement A x B
  • 1 center band as per measurement C x D
  • 2 ½ yards of ¼" thick cording
  • 2 ½ yards x 4" wide stripe of straight grain fabric for piping
Instructions
  1. Fold and press 1" hems on the back, front and center band. Do not sew yet.
  2. Center finished quilt block on the front piece. Have the bottom of the block at least 1 ½" from the folded hem edge. At the quilt block top in the center, pin out about ½". This will allow for a little wiggle room in the pocket.
  3. Attach the block to the cover by stitching in the ditch of the pinned binding seam.
  4. To make piping, fold up and press ½" hem on piping fabric at both ends. Cover cord with fabric, right sides together and sew. Use a zipper foot to stitch close to the cording. Trim seam allowance to ½". At each end pull out and trim about ½" of cord.
  5. Attach piping to front and back pieces starting at the pressed edge of the hem. Clip piping fabric when turning the corners to make it lie flatter.
  6. Matching pressed hem edges, attach back and front to the center band. Stitch together.
  7. Pin hems in place and stitch from piping to piping, backstitching at the beginning and the end.
Next Month: Wall Organizer with clear vinyl pockets!
