Flannel Bed Quilt
by Carolyn Halt
Join us as we begin our 4-part Create-A-Room series for
the bedroom, with a wonderfully cozy flannel bed quilt by Carolyn Halt,
which she calls “Flying Around The Square”. Her generously sized 66’
x 78” quilt is done in clear jewel tones perfect for transitional use,
right through the winter. In fact, Carolyn had so much fun designing this
for us, she decided to piece the back as well, for versatile double-sided
appeal! Use it not only in the bedroom, but also in the den, family room,
etc.
|
| You’ve probably seen this
ensemble in the pages of Country Decorating magazine’s Winter 2004

coordinating bedroom pieces in October, November and December. |

Assembly: Front of quilt
- To assemble the Flying Geese blocks, draw a diagonal
line on the wrong side of each 3-1/2" square. Position each half
square triangle along the side of a 3-1/2" x 6-1/2"
rectangles & stitch diagonally. Press; trim seam if desired.
- Sew the opposite triangle to the other side of the
rectangle. Press; trim if desired. Repeat for all 132 rectangles.
- Beginning at the center, sew 4 sets of two flying
geese blocks together as shown.
- Sew on the border stripe, leaving at lease 4 to 5
inches un-sewn at each end for mitering. When stitching the corners to
form the miter, be sure to start and stop the stitching ¼" from
each end. Fold the miter, press and sew. Trim seam.
- Second row of flying geese: Sew 4 rows of 8 flying
geese with random prints. Sew to the edge of the quilt. Attach the
second border stripe.
- Third row of flying geese: Sew 4 rows of 14 flying
geese blocks with random prints. Sew to the edge of the quilt. Attach
the final border stripe.
- At THIS POINT, please measure the quilt! This
measurement is important for the "surprise" back design to
fit the front of the quilt properly. (Carolyn's measured 54-1/2"
at this point.)
- Sew two rows of flying geese blocks with random
prints. Sew these to the top & bottom of the quilt.
- Borders: Sew the 6-1/2" borders to the quilt for
a final measurement of 66-1/2" x 78-1/2"BORDERS:
