Angel Bear Wall Hanging

Sew up Kate Perri’s easy wall hanging in ANGEL BEARS & THREADS, Lynette Anderson’s debut collection for Marcus Fabrics. Its antique appeal and hand work make it a sweet addition to any nursery or children’s play area.

YOU’LL NEED:
(for a finished piece approx 33” x 39”)

One Angel Bears & Threads panel
For border: ¼' yard each or fat quarters of 10 – 15 assorted prints
For inside border: ¼' yard of blue ground floral
For backing: 1 yard of your favorite print
Batting: at least 34” x 40”
Embellishments: embroidery floss and assorted buttons.
Paper-backed fusible web for heart appliqués

Editor’s Note: Please avoid using buttons or other removable trims where wall hanging will be displayed within the reach of small children.

Instructions:
Use ¼” seam allowances.
  1. Cut down Angel Bear panel by cutting away all of the burgundy flower print. Piece will measure 22” x 28”.
  2. Cut three 1 ½” strips of blue ground floral print on width of fabric so that strips equal approx. 44” x 1 ½”, border Angel Bear panel.
  3. For the border: Layer several fabrics at a time and cut into approx. 9” x 8” rectangles. While they are still stacked, cut them into several uneven strips at a slight angle. Do this for each of your assorted fabrics.
  4. Piece together randomly, leave some odd angles, make four strips, each long enough to use as a border.
  5. When border pieces are long enough, cut a straight line down one side and sew this side onto quilt. Do not trim outside of border yet.
  6. Pick a fabric for heart appliqués and apply fusible web to the back of the fabric according to manufacturer’s instructions. Draw hearts freehand, and fuse to border of quilt.
  7. Embellish angel bears and borders with running stitches of embroidery floss. Use blanket stitch around hearts.
  8. Mark a curving shape around edge of asymmetrical border.
  9. Sandwich quilt: top, batting and backing; pin or baste.
  10. Using invisible thread on top, quilt in the ditch between angel bear blocks and around the inside borders and on marked line on outside border.
  11. Add assorted buttons between angel bear blocks.
  12. Using pinking sheers or a wavy blade rotary cutter, carefully trim edges of quilt about ¼” outside of curving quilted line. Leave edges raw.
