PIECED & PIPED NECK ROLL
By Vandarra Robbins

NOTE: Instructions are for a finished neck roll 26” long. Adjust measurements for pillows of different sizes. All seams are 1/4” unless otherwise noted.

YOU’LL NEED:

R35 AUNT GRACE’S SCRAPBAG 2004
(4) coordinating fat quarters
1/2 yard main neck roll fabric
3-1/2 yards of piping
1 yard of cording for ties
Fiberfill or pillow form

CUTTING GUIDE
  • From each of the fat quarter fabrics (fabrics 1 through 4), cut five pieces, 3” wide x 6Ύ” long.
  • From the main fabric, cut one piece 3Ύ” x 26”, and two pieces 5½” x 16½” (1/2” seam allowance to attach)
CONSTRUCTION
  1. Cut fabrics 1 through 4 on the cross grain into strips measuring 3” wide.

  1. Sew strips 1 and 2 together, sew strips 3 and 4 together. You should now have two strips.

  1. From these two strips cut 6Ύ” pieces.

  1. To make the first row, arrange the 6 Ύ” pieces so that the fabrics fall in the order of 1:2 & 3:4. There are ten pieces to each side so you should end with piece #2. Sew the pieces together in this order.
  1. Start sewing the second row with piece 3:4. Continue in the original order of 1:2 & 3:4 until there are ten pieces.
  1. Cut two lengths of piping to match the center piece of fabric. Baste piping to the long sides of the center piece.

  1. With right sides together, sew a strip of the pieced fabrics to each piped side.
  2. With right sides together sew the completed pieces so that it forms a tube.
  3. Baste piping to each end of the tube the same as you did for the center panel. Set aside until the ends have been completed.
  1. To make the end pieces, sew each piece right sides together to form a tube. Sew the beginning of the seam for ½”. Back stitch. Begin the remaining of the seam 1” away. This is the opening for the ties.
  2. Press seam open and stitch down seam allowance around the opening.
  3. To form a casing for the ties turn up a Ό hem on the opening side. Press in place and turn up again Ύ”. Press and stitch in place.
  4. With right sides together, pin the end pieces to neck roll, matching the end piece seam with the neck roll seam. Stitch together with a ½” seam allowance.
  5. Turn right side out. Cut cording into two equal lengths. To easily insert cording and prevent fraying, wrap ends with tape and insert through the casing.
  6. Stuff neck roll with fiberfill or use a pillow form. Once stuffed, tie cords into a bow.
