By Vandarra Robbins

NOTE: Instructions are for a finished 14” square pillow, plus flange. All seams are Ό” unless otherwise noted.

YOU’LL NEED:

R35 AUNT GRACE’S SCRAPBAG 2004
(5) coordinating fat quarters
1½ yards purchased or self-fabric piping
Fiberfill or purchased pillow form

CUTTING GUIDE
Fabrics #1 through 4 - 1 large triangle 17Ύ” x 12!]” x 12!]”
Fabrics #1 through 4 - 1-small triangle 12Ό” x 8Ύ” x 8Ύ”
Fabric #5 - 2-flanges 20” x 2”
2-flanges 17” x 2”
1-overlap-20” x 13Ό”
1-underlap 20” x 13Ό”
Note: Follow the grain line direction when cutting fabrics. The long sides of all triangles are cut on the straight of grain.

CONSTRUCTION
  1. Finish one 20” edge of the back overlap and underlap with a 1” hem.
  2. With wrong side to right side, match the two pieces so that there is a 3” over/under lap. Baste together at both sides. Set aside.
  3. With right sides together sew fabric #1 to fabric #2 at one short side. As these are two bias seams, pay close attention not to stretch the fabrics while sewing. Sew fabric #3 to #4 in the same manner.
  4. Sew fabric unit 1-2 to fabric unit 3-4. Square up the completed piece.
  5. Baste piping to the square, overlapping or folding in at the ends. Note: Overlap the ends of the piping somewhere along the seamline, rather than at one of the corners, for a smoother finish. Sew the larger triangles in the same manner as the small changing the fabric line up so that fabric # 2 is paired with # 3, and fabric # 1 is paired with # 4.
  1. Center the wrong side of the piped square over the right side of the large square. Stitch in the ditch of the piping to attach together
  2. With right sides together, sew the short flanges to two opposite sides of the square.
  3. Sew remaining flanges to remaining edges.
  4. With right sides together pin over/under lap piece to square and sew together. Note: If under/overlap piece is larger or smaller than the square, make the over lap larger or smaller than 3”. Do not go below 1½”.
  5. Turn right side out and press. Topstitch around the pillow 2” from the edge through all layers.
