Creating “Autumn Leaves”
A Virtual Workshop
By Natalie Sewell
Natalie’s newest landscape wall hanging may look complicated but it’s
amazingly simple to recreate, with the fabrics from Natalie Sewell’s new
collection, THE
FOREST EDGE.
Note from Natalie: Most of the directions
given here are meant to be tips on technique rather than exact
measurements or patterns. Don’t worry if your pieces and placement
do not duplicate mine exactly. Once you’ve completed your design,
you’ll understand how to create other scenes of your choosing.
Cut
the big tree background fabric (H109 –181W) 19” long and selvedge
to selvedge. Cut another 19” long piece of background fabric that is
18” wide.
Place
the two background pieces side by side, overlapping slightly and glue
the overlapped edges together. (Natalie uses a simple paper glue
stick.) Your background piece should now measure 19’’ long and 54”
wide. If you prefer a different size quilt, simply change these
dimensions. The rest of the directions will still apply.
Cut
11 or 12 irregularly shaped pieces of the salmon/green foliage fabric.
Place the pieces randomly on the background
fabric to create the illusion of distant foliage.
Cut
two to three dozen leaf clusters from the red/gold leaf fabric.
Place and glue the leaf clusters to the
branches of the big tree background fabric.
You’ve now completed your scene! Use your favorite finishing
techniques to complete the quilt.
