Make it with Marcus Fabrics

Chenille Bathmat
Finished size is 22” x 34”
A great addition to any bathroom, and an excellent “guy’s gift”, this PINEWOOD LAKE FLANNELS bath mat is made by layering four identical pieces of fabric, matching the prints through all four layers. Designer Laura Farson explains, “The fabric is topstitched to outline the center area and then it is quilted with diagonal stitching lines. The center channels are cut through three layers to open up the fabric. Once backed with a pieced section and bound, the mat is laundered to make the cut edges “bloom”.

You’ll Need:
RO8 PINEWOOD LAKE FLANNEL
3-yards scenic print: V710-340D
One 1/2-yard pine cone print: V711-350D
1/3-yard of six flannel coordinates: V717-311D

V712-340D
V735-314D
V715-350D

  1. The pattern repeat for the scenic fabric is 8". You will need three repeats of the pattern to make a 24" wide bath mat.
  2. Cut four identical 24" wide selvedge-to-selvedge pieces using a motif on the fabric as the marker for the cutting line.
  3. Layer the four identical pieces so they are oriented in the same direction.
  4. Using pins, match points of the motifs through all four layers. Pin in place.
  5. Trim the selvedges along one side of the layered fabrics. Trim the second side so the layers measure 24" x 35".
  6. With a rotary ruler and fabric-safe marker, draw a line 8-1/2" from the outer edges of the bath mat, forming a rectangle.
  7. Stitch along the lines of the rectangle. This forms the border of the center chenille area.
Helpful Hint: Use a dual or even-feed quilting foot on your sewing machine.
  8. With a fabric-safe marker, draw a 45-degree line on the top fabric layer. This is your quilt stitch guide line.
  9. Stitch along the guide line.
  10. Using the first line of stitching as your guide, stitch parallel lines that are at least 3/8" (this may be the width of your pressure foot) apart over the entire surface of the layered fabrics. Alternate the direction of the stitching to avoid puckering or bunching of the layers.
  11. "Square-up" the corners where the fabric may have shifted.
  12. With a sharp-pointed scissors, cut for 1" through just three layers of each center channel, taking care not to cut the base layer.
  13. With either a rotary chenille cutter or an electric scissor, cut the length of each center channel, again through just the top three layers.
  14. Cut the rest of the channels to the opposite stitching line with the sharp-pointed scissors.
  15. Prepare the back side of the bathmat as follows:
Construction - Back side - Nine Patch Quilt blocks
  1. From each of the coordinating fabrics, cut a 12” square of fabric.
  2. Layer the six squares with all edges even.
  3. Cut three sets of 4” wide strips.
  4. While maintaining the sequence of layers, bring one strip from the bottom of the right hand stack to the top.
Bring two strips from the bottom of the middle stack to the top.
Mark the top layer of each stack by placing a pin into top piece of each fabric stack.
  5. Stitch the top three rectangles to make a three-piece square. While maintaining the sequence, repeat for the remaining five sets of rectangles. (Chain piecing makes this step quick.)
Press the seam allowances to one side.
  6. Layer the pieced squares in the same order with the edges even.
  7. Cut across the seams into three sets of 4 inch strips.
  8. Bring three strips from the bottom of the right hand pile to the top.
From the middle pile, move four strips to the top.
  9. Sew these strip sets into squares. Press
  10. Stitch the blocks into rows and join the rows.
  11. Cut three 2-1/2" wide selvedge to selvedge strips for the border. Cut one strip in half and stitch the two pieces to the short sides of the mat. Press
  12. Join the remaining border strips to the remaining sides. Press
  13. With right sides out, layer the chenille side on the back. Trim any extra border fabric.

Binding

  1. Cut four 2" selvedge to selvedge strips of the blue pine cone print fabric. Join with bias seams and bind with a single layer.
  2. Launder with cool water. Dry in the clothes dryer. Note: There is 9% shrinkage.
