SURF & SAND Decorative Band Boxes Make it with Marcus Fabrics
SURF & SAND Decorative Band Boxes

The more we look at this gorgeous collection, the more project ideas we seem to think up. Shown here are some quick and simple nesting boxes to store your favorite keepsakes and accessories in style. Invest in the perfect trims in shades of blue with tan to complete the boutique look!

Hat boxes by Theresa McDermott
Instructions from African Accents by Lisa Shepard Stewart

Hat Box

YOU'LL NEED (for each box)
1 yard main box print
½ yard contrast print for box lid
Purchased plain hatbox (or recycle an existing one)
3 yards paper-backed fusible web
Tassel trim or other decorative trims
Optional: batting, cut to the size & shape of the lid

  1. Apply fusible web to fabric, following manufacturer's instructions. Measure the box height and add 2"; measure the circumference and add 1" (Fig. 1). Cut the fabric to these dimensions. Remove fusible paper backing from the fabric and wrap fabric around the box with 1" extending at the top and bottom. Fuse fabric to box all around. Clip about 7/8" into the extending fabric edges all around the top and bottom, turn clipped edges in and fuse down (Fig. 2).
  2. Cut another piece of fabric for the box lining, measuring the circumference plus 1", and the height minus ½". Position this piece inside the box, aligning the fabric with the bottom of the box and having the top edge overlap the turned edges of the previously fused fabric. Fuse. Cut a circle of fabric ¼" smaller all around than the bottom of the box. Center this over the raw fabric edges on the outside bottom of the box and fuse. OPTIONAL: Cut a second circle to cover the inside box bottom.
  3. To cover the lid, cut a circle of fabric the size of the top plus 1½" all around. Place optional batting over the lid, then center fabric over the batting & lid. Fuse fabric, clipping edges about 5/8" into the extending fabric edges and fusing them down as you did for the bottom of the box (Fig. 3). Cut a strip of fabric measuring the circumference of the band plus 1", and the width of the band plus ½". Apply fusible web to band strip fabric; fuse under ¼" on each long end, then fuse the fabric to the band so the fused edges are even with the edges of the band, with top edge covering the clipped edges of the top lid fabric (Fig. 4). OPTIONAL: Cut a second circle of fabric and a second strip to line the inside of the lid, fuse to lid.
Use a glue gun to apply trims to the lid.
