D537 126D 1/4 12
D538 114D 1/3   4 used for border #2
Note: Yardage estimates are approximate. Border fabric estimates assume that long strips are pieced.

Border finished widths:
Inner border (#1) = 1”
Middle border (#2) = 1 1/2”
Outer border (#3) = 3 1/2” yardage estimate includes allowance for
1/2" fold-over to backing of fabric

Instructions:

Please Note: The following method of piecing the rectangle-triangle blocks will leave you with 'extra' small triangle pieces after you trim in step 6. While you could avoid some of the excess triangles by instead cutting two usable triangles from one larger (3+7/8" x 3+7/8") square and sewing them to the rectangles, the method shown here is simpler and yields more predictable results!
  1. Each finished block measures 6" x 6" and consists of four pieces (two rectangles each with a triangle section).
  2. First, select the fabric for the triangles (*identified in list above); cut squares that measure 3+1/2” x 3+1/2”. These squares will be sewn right side to right side onto the rectangles in step 5. Do not cut these into triangles!
  3. Next, select the fabrics for the rectangles; cut the number of rectangle patches indicated that measure 6+1/2" x 3+1/2".
  4. Lay out the rectangles on a table or design wall to approximate the design as pictured, except that the triangles will be added in the next step.
  5. Working from the top left block, select the first of its two rectangles; lay a square of the triangle fabric from step 2 right side to right side onto one end of this rectangle, being careful to orient it appropriately. (See detailed step-by-step diagram for this and the next step.)
  6. Sew a diagonal line across the square to form a triangle, being careful to orient the pieces correctly according to the quilt illustration. Fold the triangle over and trim the excess.
  7. Complete this for both rectangles (that together constitute a block), then repeat steps 5 and 6 for all blocks, working systematically row by row and watching the orientation of each component carefully!
  8. When you have sewn all triangles to their respective rectangles, sew each rectangle-plus-triangle piece to its paired piece to form the square blocks that each measure 6+1/2" x 6+1/2".
  9. Once all the square blocks are sewn together, sew these squares together row by row, then sew the rows together.
  10. Sew strips of selected fabrics for all three borders. Attach borders, starting with border #1, then #2 and finally #3.
  11. Prepare for quilting - layer quilt top with batting and fabric for the back; quilt by hand or machine; outer border may be turned over and sewn to backing, if desired.
