| Pillows Construction: |
| Fabric requirements |
| Backing: for each pillow: 2/3 yard of a
coordinating fabric cut into two 15 x 22 pieces |
| Batting 23 square |
| Lining 22 square muslin |
| 15 pillow form |
|
- With the reserved squares, construct four
pinwheel blocks for each pillow.
The blocks may be made with like halves or mixed fabrics,
for a scrappier look.
- Join the four pinwheel blocks into a square.
- Prepare the back side of the pillow.
- With the wrong side of the backing fabric
facing up, fold over 3 along the long side of both pieces to
form a facing. (The pieces will measure 12x22 with the
fold.)
- Press the folds and stitch along the raw edge.
|
| Assembling the pillow |
- Layer the pillow parts from the bottom to the
top. Hint: spray the first three layers with temporary adhesive
to prevent shifting
- First the 22 square of muslin,
- Next the 22 square of batting
- Place the pieced front, right side up, on the
batting.
- On top of the pieced front, place one of the
backing fabric pieces with the right side down (fold facing up)
aligned so the raw edge lines up with the previous layered
fabrics.
- With the right side down, place the second
backing fabric piece on top of the first, with the folds
overlapping, aligned to match the opposite raw edge.
- Stitch ½ from the raw edge through all the
layers around the perimeter of the square, rounding the corners.
- Hint: Before trimming, I turn the pillow
right side out through the placket created by the overlapped
folded backing fabric to check that all the layers were
caught in the stitching.
- Trim the excess fabric at the corners, and turn
the pillow right side out.
- Press the seams open so the pillow lies flat.
- Pin the perimeter areas of the pillow square.
- Topstitch through all layers, 1/2 and 3
in from the outer turned edges. (in the ditch formed by the
inner pinwheel seams)
- Remove the pins and insert a 15 square
pillow form into the pocket.
