Batting 60” square

Quilt Construction:
With right sides together, sew a yellow textured strip to each of the print and textured 3-1/2” wide strips with a Ό” seam allowance. You will have 40 strips, each with one side of the yellow textured fabric; half with texture and half with prints.
Illustration 2
Press the seam allowances toward the print or textured fabric (i.e. away from the yellow).

With right sides together, pair the textured strips in Column A with the print strips from Column B. Illustration 3Orient the strips so that the yellow textured fabric is above the print fabric on the bottom layer and below the texture on the top layer. (Seam allowances will oppose.) See Illustration 3.

Illustration 4
Trim the selvedges from the two layered pairs. Cut four 6-1/2” squares from the layered fabric strips.

Reserve the remaining strip fabric for another project.

Illustration 5
With a fabric marker or pencil draw a diagonal line from the upper left corner to the lower right corner of the squares as shown in Illustration 5. Be sure to keep the color orientation as shown in the illustration.
Illustration 6
Stitch Ό” on both sides of the line. Hint: Chain piece the four like squares through the sewing machine.
Illustration 7
With a rotary ruler, cutter, and mat, cut on the line.
Repeat for the remaining three like squares. Note: It is very important that you keep the “halves” in separate groups. Illustration 8Each half of the square makes a distinct pattern as shown in Illustration 8.

Press the squares open and trim the “ears”. Continue to keep the like groups separate.

Illustration 9
Assemble the four like squares into a pinwheel block. For this quilt, use the blocks with the texture in the center pinwheels. Sew the pieces in pairs and join the pairs with opposing seams.

Assemble the quilt by joining the four center squares. Refer to the photo for the layout.
  • Sew the purple inner border to the center squares, by stitching two 6-1/2 x 22-1/2” purple strips on opposite sides of the four joined center blocks.
  • Press the seams toward the purple fabric.
  • Stitch 6-1/2” x 34.5” strips to the remaining two sides of the center square.
  • Join the top and bottom five blocks into rows.
  • Join two sets of three blocks for the two short side rows.
  • Join these three-block rows to the purple fabric of the center block.
  • Stitch the top and bottom rows to the center joined blocks.
