Sew up Laura Farson’s fun & easy design for your favorite little cowboy with INTO THE WEST. Classic colors make this line a great accent for denim room accessories, as well as shirts, PJ’s and more.
 
You’ll Need:
  • 1˝ yards Red Bandana print
  • 2/3 yard Blue Bandana print
  • ˝ yard Large Cowboy print
  • 1/8 each: Guitar, Horseshoes, White motifs
  • 3/8 yard Red Checkerboard
  • 3/8 yard Blue Checkerboard
  • 1-1/3 yard 45” wide low loft batting
Cutting Guide:

Red Bandana print, cut into one 42" square for the backing, and Four 1-1/2" width-of-fabric strips for sashing Four 3" squares for the center framing, Two 3" x 18" strips for the bandana ties, and two 12-1/2" squares for the corners

Blue Bandana print, cut into two 12-1/2" squares for the corners and Two 3" x 18" strips for the bandana ties and four 1-1/2" wide width-of-fabric strips for the sashing

Large Cowboy Print - "Fussy-cut" four 4-1/2" square cowboy motifs for the center of the 9-patch blocks, and one 12-1/2" square for the large center square

Guitars, Horseshoes, and White Small Print Cowboy Motif, cut into one 4-1/2" wide width-of-fabric strips, cross cut into 4-1/2" squares for the 9-patch blocks

Red Checker Board and Blue Checker Board, cut into two 12-1/2" squares for the corner blocks and one 4-1/2" wide width-of-fabric strip, cross cut into four 4-1/2" squares

1-1/3 yard 45" wide lightweight batting

  1. Arrange nine 4-1/2" squares as shown in the photo. Sew the squares together in rows, with seams pressed opposite. Repeat for the remaining three 9-patch squares.
  2. Fold the two blue and two red bandana squares in half diagonally. Press. Place the folded bandana triangles on top of the red and blue checkerboard corner squares. Topstitch 1/2" from the diagonal fold.
    Trim away the extra fabric from the backside. Press.
  3. Fold the four 3" red bandana squares in half diagonally. Press.
  4. Place the four squares on each corner of the cowboy print center square. Pin. Cut two of each of the 1-1/2" wide red and blue sashing strips into six 14" lengths. (You will trim them later.) Arrange the sashing as shown or desired. Sew a vertical strip to each of the top row squares. Sew the horizontal strip to each of these squares. Join the squares in a horizontal row. Repeat for the middle row.
  5. Sew the vertical sashing strips between the lower squares. Join these squares into a row. Press the seams open. Join the rows.
  6. Sew the uncut sashing strips to the outer border of the joined squares.
  7. With right sides together, layer the backing and top. Place the batting on the top and pin in place. Sew around three sides and partially along the top, leaving an 8" opening. Turn right sides out and press to open the seams. Stitch the top opening closed.

Ties
  1. Fold the 3" x 18" rectangle in half lengthwise. Cut the corners diagonally.
  2. Sew 1/8" seam along the raw edge leaving a 2" gap for turning. Trim corners Turn right side out and press. Stitch the opening shut. Repeat for the remaining three ties.
  3. Make a single overhand knot in the tie and pin to the center of the bandana. Stitch under the knot and tack at the outer corners to secure.
  4. Quilt as desired.
