Sew up Sue Pickering's faux log cabin variation, "Lancaster Hex Signs", in the warm tones of LANCASTER COUNTY, the cheddars-and-reds collection by Judie Rothermel. The block elements are made from shaded triangle squares with top stitched cheddar colored accents. You'll make a total of 64 blocks for this quilt. Each star is a 20" square!

You'll Need:

Fat quarter of light beige
Three fat quarters assorted beige
Four fat quarters assorted yellows
Four fat quarters assorted reds
Four fat quarters assorted browns
1/4 yard cheddar orange
1-1/4 yard backing

Assembly:
  1. Cut all fabrics 6" wide across the 22" width of the fat quarter (except cheddar). They will be re-cut into 6" squares. You will need the following number of squares (Lt. beige-4) (Beige-12) (Brown-16) (Red-16) (Yellow-16).
  2. To make a tri-square, mark the wrong side of square diagonally form point to point. Sew 1/4 " from each side of the line, cut on the line and iron the seam allowance to the darker side of the triangle square. From each pair of squares you will net two tri-squares. You will need to sew the following pair combinations: (Brown/Yellow-4) (Red/Yellow-4) (Yellow/Beige-4) (Red/Brown-4) (Brown/Brown-2) (Yellow/Yellow-2) (Beige/Beige-2) (Red/Red-2) (Brown/Lt. Beige-20) (Lt. Beige/Red-2) (Beige/Red-2) (Beige/Brown-2).
  3. Carefully trim all 64 triangle-squares to be 5-1/2" square.
  4. Cut three 2" strips from the cheddar fabric. Re-cut into 2" squares. Center a square on each block and topstitch 1/4 " from the edge. Gently pull a few threads from the four sides of the finished blocks.
  5. Referring as needed to the picture of the quilt arrange the blocks into stars. Sew the blocks into rows and then sew the rows together. If you have cut and sewn accurately the star block will be a 20-1/2" square.
  6. Sew the four star blocks together as pictured. The border is left over pieces of the fat quarters cut 20-1/2" X 2-1/2". The corner posts are cheddar 2-1/2" squares. Hand or machine quilt as desired.
