Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum Collection
Size 84” x 84”
by Joanne S. Nolt

Joanne Nolt’s “Rocky Mountain Pine Tree” quilt design features all 29 prints from Judie Rothermel’s Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum Collection, in conjunction with the Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum. It contains three different blocks: a 15” Pine Tree, 12” Album Blocks, and 9” Variable Star blocksDownload the PDF diagrams and templates

You'll Need:

1¾ yard red F017-111T, for the middle border and binding
1 yard light F028-132T, for the Pine Tree block and other blocks as desired
1¼ yard Tumbling Block print F029-113, for the center medallion
½ yard of 10 assorted light and dark fabrics in the line
Fat quarters of each of the remaining 16 fabrics in the line
1/3 yard muslin
7½ yards backing fabric
90” square of batting

Album Blocks (12” finished square)
Designer’s Note: Choose two fabrics for each block. Think of the triangles as Fabric 1, and the narrow strips as Fabric 2 for each block. If you cut a strip 10¾” x 22” you can cut a 10¾” square for the triangles of one block and four strips to use in a second block.

Diagram 1Cutting for each of 24 Album blocks:
Cut (1) 10¾” square from Fabric 1: then cut it in quarters diagonally to yield 4 triangles (see Diagram 1)
Cut (4) 2-5/8” x 8½” strips from Fabric 2
Cut (1) 2-5/8” square, muslin

Construction:
  1. Stitch a muslin square between two 2-5/8” x 8½” Fabric 2 strips to make a pieced strip. Press the seam toward the muslin square. (Diagram 2)
  2. Lay out the triangles placing the remaining Fabric 2 strips between them, as shown. (Diagram 3)
Diagram 2
Diagram 3
  1. Diagram 4Stitch a Fabric 2 strip between two triangles to make a block section. Stitch carefully to avoid stretching as you will be sewing along the bias edge. The strip will extend past the triangles. (Diagram 4) Repeat to make two block sections. Press the seams toward the triangles.
  2. Stitch the pieced strip between the two block sections to complete an Album block. Press the seams toward the pieced strip.
  3. Lay the block on a cutting surface and trim it to measure 12½” square. Make 24 blocks varying the fabrics.
  4. Join 5 Album Blocks together to make a short Album row. Make 2 rows.
  5. Join 7 Album Blocks together to make a long Album row. Make 2 rows. Set the rows aside until assembling the quilt top.

Variable Star Blocks (9” finished square)
Designer’s Note: Make this block using 3, 4, or 5 different fabrics to achieve a look from controlled to very scrappy. Each block is uniquely beautiful, so have fun seeing how many variations you can come up with.

For each of 20 Variable Star blocks:
Cut (4) 3½” squares for the block corners
Cut (1) 3½” square for the center
Cut (2) 5” squares for the star points
Cut (2) 5” squares from another print for the small triangles surrounding the center square

Construction:
  1. Diagram 5Place two 5” squares cut from different fabrics right sides together. Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the lightest fabric.
  2. Stitch ¼” from the drawn line on both sides.
  3. Cut the square into quarters by first cutting along the drawn line and then cutting diagonally from corner to corner, as shown. (Diagram 5)
  1. Diagram 6Open the 4 pieced units and press.
  2. Make a new square by stitching 2 pieced units together, alternating placement of the fabrics. (Diagram 6) Press the pieced square and trim to measure 3½”, keeping the seam intersections in the center. Make 2 pieced squares this way.
  3. Repeat to make two more pieced squares, using the remaining 5” squares.
  1. Diagram 7Lay out the pieced squares, 3½” corner squares and the 3½” center square in 3 rows of 3 to form a block, as shown (Diagram 7).
  2. Stitch the squares into rows. Join the rows. Press.
  3. Make 20 Variable Star blocks.
  4. Join 4 Variable Star blocks to make a short Star Row. Make 2 rows.
  5. Join 6 Variable Star blocks to make a long Star Row. Make 2 rows. Set the rows aside until assembling the quilt top.

Pine Tree Block (15” finished block) [shown on point]
Designer’s Note: The inspiration for this block is to be created to “One Hundred and One Patchwork Patterns”, by Ruby McKim, Dover Publications, Inc. New York

Cutting:
Cut (3) 2 3/8” squares of various medium to dark prints; then cut each in half diagonally to make 6 small print triangles.
Cut (18) 3” squares of medium to dark prints
Cut (18) 3” squares, light background
Cut (3) 2” squares, light background
Cut (1) A, light background
Cut (1) A-reverse, light background
Cut (2) 5 3/8” squares, light background; then cut each in half diagonally to make 4 large light triangles (you will use 3)
Cut (1) 5 3/8” squares, dark fabric for the truck; then cut it in half diagonally to make 2 large dark triangles
Cut (1) 3” square, dark fabric for the truck; then cut it in half diagonally to make 2 small dark triangles
Cut (1) B, dark fabric for the trunk
Cut (2) 2” x 15½” strips, contrasting fabric for the short framing strips
Cut (2) 2” x 18½” strips, contrasting fabric for the long framing strips

Diagram 8Construction:
  1. Place a 3” background square and a 3” medium or dark print square right sides together and draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the background square.
  2. Stitch ¼” from the drawn line on both sides. (Diagram 8)
  3. Cut the squares along the marked line to make two pieced squares. Open and press.
  4. Trim each pieced square to measure 2”.
  5. Repeat to make 36 pieced squares, using the remaining 3” background and print squares.
  1. Lay out the following pieces, as shown in the Diagram. Stitch them into rows, then into units (Diagram 9)
Diagram 9

Row 1: 4 pieced squares and one small print triangle
Row 2: 5 pieced squares and one small print triangle
Row 3: 6 pieced squares and one small print triangle
Join Rows 1, 2 and 3 to make a small Pine Tree Unit. Set aside.

Row 4: a small print triangle, 6 pieced squares and a 2” background square
Row 5: a small print triangle, 6 pieced squares, a 2” background square and a pieced square
Row 6: a small print triangle, 6 pieced squares, a 2” background square and 2 pieced squares.
Join Rows, 4, 5 and 6 to make a large Pine Tree Unit. Set aside.

  1. Diagram 10Lay out these pieces for the trunk unit: B, 2 small dark triangles and 2 large dark triangles, A, and A-reversed (Diagram 10)
  2. Join these pieces in the following order to make a unit: sew the small dark triangle to A; sew the large dark triangles to A. Press and sew this unit to one side of B.
  3. Repeat, using the remaining pieces to make a reverse unit. Sew the reverse unit to the opposite side of B to complete the trunk unit. Press
  1. Diagram 11Stitch the small Pine Tree unit to the trunk unit. (Diagram 11)
  2. Stitch the large Pine Tree unit to the adjacent side of the trunk unit.
  3. Sew three of the large light triangles to the unit to square the Pine Tree block.
  4. Press the block and square it to measure 15 ½” square.
  5. Stitch the 2” x 15½” short framing strips to opposite sides of the Pine Tree block.
  6. Stitch a 2” x 18½” long framing strips to the remaining sides of the block and press as before.
  7. Press the framing strips under ¼” on all sides.

Tumbling Block & Pine Tree Center Unit

Cut (1) 27½” x 36½” rectangle, Tumbling Blocks print
Cut (2) 2” x 36½” strips, from two different fabrics
Cut (2) 3½” x 36½” strips, from two different fabrics

  1. Stitch one of each strip width together along their length to make a pieced strip. Make 2 pieced strips.
  2. Stitch a pieced strip to each long side of the Tumbling Blocks print to complete the Tumbling Block unit.
  3. Center the Pine Tree block, on the Tumbling Block unit, placing it on point. Pin the block in place carefully, then machine stitch the Pine Tree block in place to complete the quilt center, as in the quilt photo. (NOTE: You may prefer to hand appliqué the block in place. Also, to reduce bulk, you may wish to trim the excess Tumbling Block fabric from behind the block, working from the back of the quilt.)
Quilt Assembly
  • Stitch a short Star row to opposite sides of the quilt center.
  • Stitch a long Star row to the remaining sides of the quilt center.
For the red middle border and binding strips:
Cut (6) 3 ½” strips, red, across the width of the fabric.
Cut (9) 2 ½” strips, red, across the width of the fabric for the binding. Set these aside.
  • Join the six 3½” red strips end to end to make one long pieced strip. From it cut two 54½” long strips and two 60½” long strips.
  • Matching center to the center of each strip and aligning the ends, sew the 54½” red strips to opposite sides of the quilt.
  • Stitch the 60½” red strips to the remaining sides of the quilt in the same way.
To complete the quilt top:
  • Stitch a short Album row to opposite sides of the quilt.
  • Stitch a long Album row to the remaining sides of the quilt.
Finishing:
  • Layer the quilt top with batting and backing. Baste, and quilt by machine or hand.
  • Join the nine 2½” strips end to end to make a continuous binding strip. Bind the quilt, and add a label.
