Block Layout: It is recommended that the blocks be placed on a design wall. If no design wall is
available, at least lay each nine patch style block out to make sewing easier. When all 20 blocks are sewn, lay out to
be sure placement is correct.
Border Construction: The quilt at this time should measure 56-1/2"x 66-1/2". For the first
border, cut 7-2" strips across the width of the fabric. Sew all strips together to make one strip. You can sew the
border on and miter the corners or sew the side borders on and finish by sewing the top and bottom border on. Your quilt
should now measure 70-1/2"long and 60-1/2"wide. If it is not this size, either the size of the border blocks
must be adjusted or the last border that you put on must be adjusted. Either cut the border down to size or add another
border to get the size that you need. It is much easier to adjust the border than to try to recalculate the size of the
block border.
Block Border: The block border is made up of four strips of 10 blocks. These blocks are constructed
in the same manner as the blocks of the body, and will measure 9 3/4" square finished. Cut the solid squares 3
3/4". The half triangles will be made up of two squares cut 4 3/4" and made as the half triangle blocks in the
main body. When the half triangle blocks are complete they also will be squared at 3 3/4". Construct the nine patch
blocks and press and square up to be 9 3/4". Refer to the quilt picture for fabric placement. Sew blocks into 2 -10
block strips and 2 -6 block strips, follow the picture to make the zig zag design border go in the correct direction,
then sew strips to the sides and each end of the quilt. The 10 blocks strips on the sides and the six block strips to
the top and bottom.
Third Border: Cut 8 -2" strips for this border. Sew on using the same method as the first
border.
Final Border: This border is shown in a stripe all going the same direction. In order to achieve
this, a length of stripe must be 90" to fit the side. If the side border is pieced, it must be matched perfectly to
achieve the proper look. To make this border extra fabric must be purchased. To make the border across the width of the
fabric, cut (9) 2 3/4" strips. Sew strips together end to end. Sew in same manner as first and third borders.
Square edges, then layer quilt and bind in your favorite manner.
