Make it with Marcus Fabrics
Spotzville Strippy
QUILT SIZE: 56" x 80" (142cm x 203cm)
BLOCK SIZES: 8"x 4" and 4" x 4"

We are thrilled to bring you Jan Mullen's own quilt design, featuring PLAYING IN SPOTZVILLE! Consider her personal notes and advice as your own private lesson in the "ish" factor, Jan's artful, non-precise approach to quilting. Enjoy!

This quilt can easily be resized - simply make the length a multiple of 4" and choose an appropriate width measurement by either adding/subtracting strips or widening/reducing width of strips.

I have allowed for the large strips to be cut on the lengthwise grain making for an easy to cut and piece quilt - excess from your purchase can be used to make a strippy backing or a second quilt perhaps?

For the small strips I also include a more economical buying option - although stitching with this cross-grain is more difficult and the strong vertical line of the quilt is altered.

Editor's Note:
Though pictured in Jan's beautiful design, Style F406 (in three colors), is no longer available; please substitute other PLAYING IN SPOTZVILLE prints as desired. That's the beauty of Jan's fabrics - their mix-and-match quality means you can achieve the same artsy results as Jan with a few simple substitutions!

REQUIREMENTS
I have allowed for "less than precise" cutting, fabric shrinkage and for some flexible fabric usage. Requirement numbers (in bold) relate to their position in the quilt.

Large Strips - excess can be used in the backing

4 - 2 1/3yds (F409 176D)
10 - 2 1/3yds (F411 165D)

Small strips - excess can be used in the backing.
The second measurement uses a cross grain and needs to be joined
3 - 2 1/3yds (F402 197D) 0r 1/4yd
5 - 2 1/3yds (F407 176D) or 1/8yd

GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS
  1. Using my methods for cutting the blocks doesn't have to be accurate until the final squaring up process. You can cut a bit bigger and a bit crooked when you see the 'ish' measurement.
  2. I prefer to press the seams under the centre squarez to suit the way I quilt. I press after sewing every seam.
  3. I have allowed for the strips to be cut up the lengthwise grain. If you are using the cross grain, join these allowing for the seam.
  4. Wash the fabrics before cutting to achieve true post shrinkage sizes.
STRIPEZ
Cut all strips their specified width x 80 1/2" in length.
Placement from left to right;
  1. 18 1/2"
  2. 8" x 4" blocks, (see below)
  3. 2 1/2"
  4. 9 1/2"
  5. 1 1/2"
  6. 4" x 4" blocks, (see below)
  7. 1 1/2"
  8. 2 1/2" x various lengths, pieced together
  9. 2 1/2"
  10. 9 1/2"
4" x 4" BLOCKS

CUTTING A BLOCK
Blocks are 4" finished, 20 blocks are needed.
For each;
  1. Cut a 3"ish centre square from block centre fabric.
  2. Cut two 2 1/2" x 3"ish side strips from block background fabric.
  3. Cut two 5 1/2" x 2"ish top/bottom strips from the same background fabric.
PIECING A BLOCK
  1. Lightly trim the centre square to the shape you require.
    Crooked is good!
  2. Stitch the two side strips to opposite sides of the centre square.
  3. Trim to straighten the top/bottom edges. Tapering is good!
  4. Stitch on the top/bottom strips.
  5. Trim to the unfinished block size of 4 1/2" x 4 1/2".
8" x 4" BLOCKS

CUTTING A BLOCK
Blocks are 8" x 4" finished, 20 blocks are needed.
For each;
  1. Cut a 6 1/2" x 3"ish centre rectangle from block centre fabric.
  2. Cut two 7" x 2 1/2"ish side strips from block background fabric.
  3. Cut two 2 1/2" x 5 1/2"ish top/bottom strips from the same background fabric.
PIECING A BLOCK
  1. Lightly trim the centre rectangle to the shape you require.
    Crooked is good!
  2. Stitch the top/bottom strips to opposite sides of the centre rectangle.
  3. Trim to straighten the side edges. Tapering is good!
  4. Stitch on the side strips.
  5. Trim to the unfinished block size of 8 1/2" x 4 1/2".
JOINING THE BLOCKS & STRIPS
Arrange all the strips and blocks in position of your design wall to achieve a pleasing mix.
Stitch the 4" x 4" blocks together to form a strip.
Stitch the 4" x 8" blocks together to form a strip.

Pin then stitch the strips together.

Sandwich the quilt top.

QUILTING
I machine quilted in the ditch of all the strips and around the edges of the blocks and their centre squarez.
I then free quilted various double-stitched lines in the block backgrounds.

BINDING
I cut 2" cut strips, folded in half as my preferred binding.
Label and sign your quilt.
