Make it with Marcus Fabrics
Rio Quilt

We know you'll love the RIO collection by Michele D'Amore as much as we do, especially when you recreate this wonderful inspiration piece by Jean Ann Wright! Sew up her "Square Dance" quilt to show off the collection's rich color and contemporary motion. Jean Ann treated us to two different versions, one featuring the darker ground central block, and the other using the lighter ground print.

Preparation
Pre-wash and iron all fabrics. Sew all seams with 1/4" seam allowances. Press seams as you sew.

Unit Assembly
  1. Square in Square Units: Position a small square as indicated in each corner of a large square and sew in a diagonal line from corner to corner in each of the small squares. Sew corners one at a time, cut away excess fabric, fold remaining triangle out and press. (See Figure 1.)

Sew square in square units using fabric combinations as follows:
Four Fabric B squares in each corner of one Fabric A square. Make 1
Four Fabric E squares in each corner of one Fabric D square. Make 4.
Four Fabric J squares in each corner of one Fabric K square. Make 4.
  2. Sawtooth Square Border Units: Match one Fabric G square with one Fabric H square. Sew in a diagonal line from corner to corner. Trim away excess fabric and fold remaining triangle out. Press. Make 32. Sew two border strips with 7 units each and 2 border strips with 9 units each noting that in the long strips one triangle at the end of the strip is turned in a different direction.(See Figure 2.)

Quilt Assembly
  1. Sew a Fabric C border to opposite sides of the Square In Square Fabric A/B unit.
  2. Sew a Square In Square Fabric D/E unit to each end of remaining 2 Fabric C strips. Sew these to remaining two sides of the center assembly.
  3. Sew short Fabric F borders to opposite sides of the center assembly. Sew long Fabric F borders to remaining two sides.
  4. Sew the short Sawtooth Square Border units G/H to opposite sides of the quilt top. Sew the long Sawtooth Square Border units G/H to the remaining two sides. Position the direction of the triangles carefully referring to the illustration. (See Figure 3)
  5. Sew the short borders I to opposite sides of the quilt top. Sew the remaining two borders to the top and bottom of the quilt.
  6. Sew a stripe border strip L to opposite sides of the quilt top. Sew a Square In Square unit J/K to each end of the remaining two stripe border strips L. Sew these to the remaining sides of the quilt top. (See Figure 3)

Finishing
  1. Layer the quilt top, batting and backing and baste together using basting spray. Quilt the layers together.
  2. Sew the binding strips short ends to short ends. Fold in half lengthwise and press the fold line. Match raw edges of binding to raw edges of quilt top. Sew in place. Turn folded edge to back and sew all around outside edges.
