Stormin’ Norman Project

Sue Marsh’s cheerful “Stormin’ Norman” wall hanging is a perfect opportunity to experiment with our new Hand Dyed wools. We’re happy to offer her pattern as a special bonus this month. Visit Sue online for more patterns, books and ideas at Whistlepig Creek Productions.

YOU’LL NEED:
WR5 - HAND-DYED WOOLS – Assorted colors as follows:

2/3 yard background color
1/4 yard black – for hat & boots
1/4 yard cream – for body & head
1/4 yard red – for shirt
1/3 yard green – for scarf
1/8 yard gold – for mittens
1/8 yard orange (or 4” x 4” scrap) for nose
(2) 1-1/4” star buttons (Sue recommends “Just Another Button Company”)
Freezer paper
Black Perle cotton
Pink paint or powdered blush for cheeks

INSTRUCTIONS:
  1. Cut a 22” x 30” rectangle for the background of the wall hanging.
  2. Trace the following pieces onto the dull side of the freezer paper: snowman’s head, body, hat, scarf, mittens, boots and nose. Trace all pieces separately (for example, trace the scarf separately from the shirt), tracing across the dotted lines where pieces overlap. Cut out appliqué pieces approx. ¼ inch from tracing lines. Iron appliqués onto the appropriate fabrics. Cut out appliqués along tracing lines.
  3. Referring to the pattern and photo for placement, layer boots over body, layer shirt over body and mittens. Position head above shirt. Layer scarf, hat and nose over the head. Sue’s Tip: “I use a basting spray to hold pieces in place while I am stitching.”
  4. Stitch around all appliqué pieces using coordinating threads and a decorative or zigzag stitch, or follow Sue’s lead and use the black Perle cotton and a hand blanket stitch.
  5. Dry-brush cheeks with pink paint. To dry-brush, load a paint brush with a small amount of paint and whisk it across a paper towel or cloth until a fraction of the paint remains. Brush cheeks lightly until you reach the desired depth of color. You can also substitute a powder blush if desired.
