For a sweet and simple baby blanket with subtle tones and tactile interest, sew up Donie Mason's "Cuddle Baby" design in BABY PIN WALE, which features a fun tie-dye effect with coordinating solids. We love Donie's completed version with fun, chunky alphabet quilting (see detail photo).

Quilt Top Assembly:

This quilt is made up of just 2 basic units, a center unit and 4 ring units I call them "ring units" because they go around the center unit with a set in seam.

Center Unit:
Take 1 - 9-1/2" tie-dye square and 12 assorted 3-1/2" squares. Seam together 3 squares for the top and 3 squares for the bottom, 4 squares for each side. Be sure to arrange them so that the same colors don't meet in the corners. Sew to the 9-1/2" square as shown below. Press seams toward the center.

Ring Units:
Make 4 of these units, referring to the diagram below, and the photo for color placement. Each unit is assembled the same way, with a top, right side, bottom and left side units. Begin each unit with the tie-dye 9-1/2" square. Add to the top of this square 2 rows of (3) 3-1/2" squares. Take the next color (blue in the photo) for the top unit, and add 1 row of (3) 3-1/2" squares to the top and bottom of your square. Next, to the pink 9-1/2" square, add 2 rows of (3) 3-1/2" squares to the top. Make a strip using (5) 3-1/2" squares which will be place between the blue and pink units you just made. See the diagram below.

Assemble these four units around the center block to complete this top. To do a set-in seam, sew the top unit to the center block, in the direction of the arrow, until you are within 3" of the bottom of the center unit. Backstitch, leaving the seam undone until all units have been stitched in place, then finish by going back and completing your first seam. Once all units are joined together, quilt and finish as desired.
