Windy Leaves Wool Quilt

The tonal variations of our hand-dyed wools are perfect for Laura Farson’s leaf-inspired design! You’ll love its muted tones for any time of year, whether you display it as wall art or snuggle under it as a sofa throw on cool evenings.

You’ll Need:
  • Hand Dyed Wools, 1/3 yard each:
Sky, Light blue, Medium blue, Dark blue grey, Light green, Dark green, Earth
  • Fat quarter each:
    Orange, Gold, Purple, Rose
  • 45" square backing fabric
  • 45" square batting
  • 5 yards 2" wide binding
  • 2 yards Black Twill Tape

Cutting Plan:

  • From the Light Sky, cut three 9-1/2" squares, and one 2-1/2" x 41" strip
  • From the Light blue, cut three 9-1/2" squares
  • From the Medium Blue, cut three 9-1/2" squares, and one 2-1/2" x 40" strip
  • From the Dark blue grey, cut one 9-1/2" square
  • From the Light Green, cut two 9-1/2" squares, and one 2-1/2" x 40" strip
  • From the Dark Green, cut three 9-1/2" squares, and one 2-1/2" x 41" strip
  • From the Earth, cut one 9-1/2" square
  • From the gold, cut a 6" diameter circle and 6 elongated triangles for "rays"
  • From the Dark and Light Greens, Orange, Gold, Purple, and Rose, cut a total of 21 leaves.

Assembly:

Sun block

  1. Place the gold circle on one of the Light Sky squares, so that it covers about 2/3 of the square.
  2. Trim the circle to match the upper left corner of the square.
  3. Place the rays butted against the edge of the gold "sun" circle.
  4. Blanket stitch around the outer edges of the sun and rays.

Quilt blocks

  1. Arrange the sixteen 9-1/2" squares from light to dark starting at the upper left corner to the lower right corner.
  2. Sew the squares together into four rows.  Sew the four rows together.

Border

  1. Sew the 2-1/2" wide Light sky strip to the top of the assembled squares. Trim even with the squares.
  2. Sew the 2-1/2" wide Dark green strip to the lower edge of the assembled squares. Trim even with the squares.
  3. Sew the Light sky strip to the left edge of the assembled squares. Trim.
  4. Sew the Earth strip to the right edge of the assembled squares. Trim.

Leaves

  1. Place the 21 leaves in a random fashion on the lower right area of the quilt. Pin.
  2. Sew vein lines from the leaf points to the bottom center of the leaf and blanket stitch around the outer raw edges.
  3. Place a 3" piece of black twill tape at the lower center of each leaf.
  4. Bend the twill tape to resemble the leaf stem and pin in place.
  5. Topstitch along the center of the twill tape.
  6. Repeat steps 2 - 6 for the remaining leaves.

Finishing

Layer the back batting and quilt top. Quilt and bind as desired.
